~Wisdom Wednesdays~

Let’s Talk About Beets!

Since January 1st, I’ve been trying to decide what to talk about for my next Wisdom Wednesdays and I couldn’t think of anything until yesterday. I came to my business space after running a few errands, I opened my little fridge and saw I had some canned pickled beets that my parents lovingly made me from their gardens harvest. I thought, “It’s been a little while since I’ve had beets. Those sound really good right now!”

As I was savoring the delicious tangy beets, I started thinking about how good beets are and their awesome health benefits and then it hit me: The title, “Let’s Talk About Beets,” came into my head. I then started writing thoughts and looking up more information about the benefits of beets. It’s funny how ideas just pop into your head sometimes when you least expect it. I love it! So let’s start talking about beets!

Did you know that beets are a winter vegetable? That means they are able to grow and survive in fall and winter, very hearty, and have lots of nutrients needed to survive the winter season. Beets to me feel very grounding, and maybe it’s because they are a ground vegetable. The red color reminds me of the root chakra and the fact that the root chakra energy is grounding, and I read somewhere a while ago that eating foods the same color as the chakras, helps balance those chakras. How cool is that?

Beets also look like a heart, don’t they? Fittingly, they’re fantastic for heart health. Their vibrant red color evokes blood, and beets are known to promote healthy blood flow. They produce nitric oxide, which helps bring oxygen to muscles and dilates blood vessels, improving circulation to the brain and body. Interestingly, consuming beets 2-3 hours before a workout can boost endurance and aid muscle recovery, thanks to their high nitrate content. Pair that with a massage to further enhance circulation, and you’ve got a winning combo for healing and rejuvenation.

Beets are full of vitamins and minerals. Some of these nutrients include:

  • Folate which contains 20 percent of daily value and is good for growth as well as hearth health
  • Manganese which is 14 percent of daily value which is good for your metabolism and brain function.
  • Low in calories, so if you’re counting calories beets are good for your diet.
  • L-Glutamine which is an amino acid that supports the gut lining and helps prevent health issues such as leaky gut.
  • Good source of fiber that aids in digestion health.

Did you also know that the leafy greens of beets are also a good source of nutrients? They provide vitamins such as A, B6, C, and D. Minerals such as iron which provides 5 percent of your daily value intake, calcium, and 290 milligrams of potassium. They are also a good source of fiber, sodium, antioxidants to help fight free radicles(toxins) in your system, and nitrates. This makes them beneficial for any meal!

Beets are an incredible gift from nature, full of flavor, versatility, and health benefits. From supporting your heart and muscles to balancing your gut and grounding your energy, these vibrant root vegetables truly deserve a place on your plate. Whether you enjoy them roasted, pickled, juiced, or raw, there’s no wrong way to reap their rewards.

Tangy hue of red.

Savoring every last bite.

Not skipping a beet.

So next time you’re searching for a nourishing and delicious addition to your meals, don’t overlook the humble beet. They might just surprise you with how much they can enhance both your health and your palate.
