All About the Root Chakra

Last Wednesday, we explored Reiki, and today, we’re diving into the root chakra. This foundational energy center, known as Muladhara in Sanskrit, is located at the base of the spine. Its energy is associated with the color red, symbolizing strength, stability, and vitality. The root chakra represents our foundation and connection to the earth, much like the roots of a tree.
Understanding the Root Chakra
The symbol of the root chakra includes a four-petaled lotus and a downward-facing triangle within a square, representing grounding energy. The element of earth governs this chakra, emphasizing stability and security in our physical and emotional lives. When balanced, it fosters a sense of safety, presence, and connection with our surroundings.
Working with the root chakra has been an integral part of my Reiki journey. A few key themes that emerge with this energy since I’ve been working with this energy(especially within the last week) include grounding, feeling supported, integrating higher spiritual awareness into the physical realm, serves as the foundation upon which we build our lives, reminds us to stay present, and embrace stability.
Signs of Imbalance
Like all chakras, the root chakra can be too open or blocked. If it’s overactive, a person might become overly materialistic, self-centered, or even aggressive. Conversely, a blocked root chakra can manifest as emotional neediness, low self-esteem, self-destructive tendencies, or fearfulness. When balanced, however, this energy center fosters stability, resilience, and a strong sense of self.
An unbalanced root chakra may also show up as mental lethargy, spaciness, or difficulty focusing on goals. Recognizing these signs allows us to take steps to restore harmony, whether through movement, mindfulness, or grounding practices.
Practices to Activate the Root Chakra
One of my favorite ways to connect with this energy is through movement. Lately, I’ve been attending Tai Chi classes, which emphasize breath and movement, helping me find balance between grounding and accessing higher energy frequencies. I also recently attended a sound healing class where the practitioner used various vibrational tools and I could sense the different vibrations within my body. It inspired me to explore sound vibrations more with my own practice.

Beyond sound, other healing tools of the root chakra I love to use include spending time in nature by hiking, walking, or even just breathing in fresh air which for me fosters a sense of stability. Even in winter, I feel most at peace while snowshoeing or enjoying downhill skiing. Another non-outdoor activity I love is martial arts, which also plays a significant role in keeping me grounded.
I love utilizing essential oils while working with the root chakra as well. Wearing woodsier/muskier essential oils such as sandalwood, cedar, or palo santo creates an immediate sense of rootedness and I’ve noticed that I naturally gravitate toward these earthy aromas, as they bring me back into alignment with my physical body.
The Role of Grounding Stones and Food

Crystals and grounding stones can also enhance the stability of the root chakra. I personally connect deeply with obsidian, but each person’s energy resonates differently with various stones. Rather than seeking out specific crystals, I prefer to let them call to me, allowing intuition to guide my selection.
Another grounding element is food. Root vegetables such as potatoes and beets carry the earth’s energy, nourishing not just our bodies but also our energetic foundation. Interestingly, beets connect to the heart chakra as well, due to their deep red color and heart-like shape, demonstrating the interwoven nature of our chakras.
Final Thoughts
There are countless ways to engage with the root chakra, and I could discuss these practices endlessly! However, I hope this gives you a few ideas to explore and integrate into your own journey. Tune in next Wednesday as we shift our focus to the sacral chakra and explore its unique energy and healing techniques. Wishing you a wonderful, grounded week ahead!
I’ll leave you with a haiku poem on the root chakra energy:
Bodies are sacred.
Connecting to mother earth.
Stable and grounded.
